Fish's article is a sign only of poor scholarship, since it is readily falsifiable empirically. See the posts providing the empirical evidence to deconstruct Fish's and similar claims written by the linguists at Language Log, here (with links to the earlier posts):

I guess Fish is such a grand academic panjandrum, and so well-paid, that he does not stoop to actually test his own claims anymore.
